Thanks for using Golf Solitaire 1.1.1! If you've never played before, you
can find complete instructions by selecting the "How To Play" command on
the "Info" menu.
IMPORTANT: If you're already are using version 1.0 of Golf Solitaire,
you should follow these simple (but unusual) steps, otherwise you will
lose all of your hard-won Golf Solitaire information (if you're upgrading
from 1.1 to 1.1.1 then you can skip this part):
1) Do not delete version 1.0 until you've installed version 1.1.1
2) Once version 1.1.1 has been installed, you'll notice that it does
not take the place of the old version! Both icons should appear
right next to each other in the application launcher. Do not
panic. This is normal.
3) Start the new version by tapping on the icon labelled "Golf 1.1".
Golf Solitaire will sense that it's being run for the first time
and it will look for all of the information stored by the old
version. This information includes the preferences, the
Leaderboard, and any personal registration information.
4) Now that the "new" Golf has its own copy of the vital info, you
can safely delete the old version. Go to the memory application
and tap the "Delete apps" button. Delete the application called
"Golf". The new version, which you shouldn't delete, will appear
as either "Golf 1.1" or "Golf Solitiare 1.1", depending on your
operating system version.
You can find the very latest version of Golf Solitaire, as well as my
other applications and up-to-date registration info, on my PalmPilot
web page: http://www.mindspring.com/~jetton/pilot/
Registering Golf Solitaire
This program is shareware--you are free to try it, but you are required
to register it if you decide to keep it. Fortunately, registration is cheap
($8.00) and easy. Registration of Golf Solitaire entitles you to any and all
future updates and unlocks the handy "undo" feature in the game. You can
register one of several ways:
* Snail Mail. Simply mail a check, money order, or cash (in a pinch) for $8.00
in US funds to my address:
Jeff Jetton
442 Tanglewood Court
Nashville, TN 37211
Be sure to include your name, the name you'd like to register under
(if different), and your e-mail address so I can send you your registration
code. If you do not have an e-mail address I can send it back via snail
mail or fax, but that takes a good deal longer.
* Credit Card by Web, Phone or Fax. I accept direct credit card payments
via PalmPilotGear H.Q.. They let me know you paid, and I, in turn send you the
needed registration info.
Web: http://www.viaweb.com/pilotgearsw/jeffjetton.html
Phone: (800) 741-9070 or (817) 461-3480
Fax: (817) 461-3482
* First Virtual. If you have an account with First Virtual, you can also
register on the web: http://www.mindspring.com/~jetton/register/
First Virtual is a system that provides easy funds transfer without ever
sending your credit card number over the Internet. See their web site at
http://www.fv.com for more details.
What's With the Extra .1?
* Version 1.1.1 fixes a small bug that caused problems with the "About..."
screen. This only affects registered users whose registration name is longer
than 20 characters (a space counts as a character, too). For the differences
between version 1.0 and version1.1, read on...
What's New in Golf 1.1?
* Probably the most noticable change is the way Golf acts when a game is
over. Now, it simply asks if you'd like a new game or not. It does this
whether or not you've placed on the leaderboard. If you answer no, you
can always start a new game later by using the "New Game" menu command.
Or if you tap on the playing field after the game is over, you'll be
asked if you'd like a new game.
If you'd like to start the same game all over instead, just tap the
"No" button when asked for a new game. You can then select "Start Over"
from the Options menu.
Likewise, if you'd like to undo the final move, tap "No", then undo in
the normal fashion by tapping on the stack. Of course, this only works
in the registered version. (And yes, this is still a fine way to cheat
and get your name on the Leaderboard multiple times. Maybe next
version...)
* Taking a cue from Scott Ludwig's excellent "Pocket Chess", you can
now access all of the menu commands by writing just the menu shortcut
letter. You don't need to preface it with the "shortcut stroke". Try it
out--it's surprisingly handy.
* Many of the internal workings have been changed to work better with
the new PalmOS. In Golf's preferences, for example, you have always been
able to set the sound to be always on, always off, or to match whatever
you have in the main prefs. But now, under OS 2.0 or greater, Golf will
look at the Game Sound setting there. On earlier OS versions, it will
still look at the System Sound setting, since there is no Game Sound
option. Other subtle changes, that take place only when running under
PalmOS 2.0 or greater, include the way it looks up the date and the way
the prefs are stored. It will still run fine on older Pilots.
* The algorithm used to validate the registration code has been
improved. First, it can handle names that have punctuation and/or
numbers in them, such as "John D. O'Malley the 3rd". If you've already
registered, and would like to register under another name to take
advantage of that fact, drop me a line.
Second, the code is no longer case sensitive--you can enter the code in
all caps if you like. Third, the algorithm only requires a ten-character
code instead of the old twelve-character one. That means a little less
tedious data entry ;-) Also, a bug was fixed that only affected people
with really short names. Finally, despite the changes, all old
registration codes still work, although it won't accept the last two
code characters (since it doesn't need them).
* A conflict was fixed with another application (The Golf Score). Both
programs used the same "internal" name, which caused all sorts of
confusion when they were forced to live on the same Pilot. That
conflict, by the way, is the reason for all the above-mentioned
rigamarole you have to go through to let the new version use the old
version's data.
* The bug that let you keep playing with a lower score after already
getting on the Leaderboard has been fixed, thanks to the fact that you
can no longer keep playing the same game after you finish anymore.
Subtle though they may be, I think these changes make Golf a more
playable, more enjoyable, and more stable piece of software. The
continued support of this and other shareware programs really is made
possible by those who register. They, as always, have my deepest thanks.
Have fun!
